Please Vote for Your Favorite Shelter or Rescue

Link to Contest Site

Care2.com is having a contest to give the top ranking shelter $10,000, and the next four groups get $5,000 amongst them. Please go to the site above and vote for a local shelter or rescue you know of.

Then I ask you to be a prayer angel for the animals at your local shelter(s). Many shelters still kill unwanted animals. Please pray for the animals. Pray for there to be enough resources for rescue, that people open their hearts and homes to these animals--and that people spay and neuter their animals and that pet guardianship is a lifetime commitment for those with animals.... If we all adopt a shelter in our prayers, that will go a long way toward helping the animals. Of course, if you feel like monetary contributions or fostering or other ways to help, that is great too!

Thank you all.

Symbolism vs. Literalism

In the book Thou Art That: Transforming Religious Metaphor by Joseph Campbell, he relates a radio "interview" in which he was asked to explain "myth" but when he started speaking about metaphor, the young radio announcer kept arguing with him that metaphors were lies. Mr. Campbell then made the following observation:

“It made me reflect that half the people in the world thinks that the metaphors of their religious traditions, for example, are facts. And the other half contends that they are not facts at all. As a result we have people who consider themselves believers because they accept metaphors as facts, and we have others who classify themselves as atheists because they think religious metaphors are lies.”

Joseph Campbell

When I was in college, I thought that Christianity was really ridiculous. I went to church occasionally with my evangelical friends to keep the peace, but I really thought that otherwise intelligent people had checked their brains at the door. One of the people actually suggested that Satan had planted dinosaur fossils in the earth to trick people into believing in evolution!

I couldn’t believe that God would want people to literally believe in the creation story in the Bible when science seemed to contradict it. Nowadays, we are finding that the quantum physicists are discovering an underlying energy that seems to permeate all that is. It seems that science is finally finding that God exists, even if they don’t call it God. For more information on the new scientific findings, I recommend books by Gregg Braden, as well as those by Lynne McTaggart.

I find that Joseph Campbell’s observation is very appropriate, as I interpreted “Christianity” narrowly in the same way as my evangelical friends did—as people who believed literally in the Bible, and I just couldn’t bring myself to be one of them. It was not until later that I realized that I wasn’t really an “atheist” even though I claimed that role as a college student. Inside, I knew there was a God—just not the same type of God that was implied by their beliefs, an exclusivist God that was “up there” judging and condemning those who didn’t have the “right” beliefs.

I asked the angels for input on literalism versus symbolism, about “lie” versus metaphor:

People are very willing to accept metaphor in poetry. I am the color red, I am the blue sky, I am the depths of the dark, cold ocean…. These are poetic concepts and accepted as such, as it is logical that a person is not a color or the sky, etc. literally.

The language of the world’s sacred texts is also one of poetry. Jesus spoke in parables. Who can quantify faith in terms of physical size? Yet the idea of mustard seed-sized faith moving mountains is not aimed so much at someone telling Mt. Shasta to move left, as in telling someone that seemingly insurmountable obstacles can be vanquished with faith. But isn’t the mustard seed and mountain language more memorable, more concrete, and more powerful?

It’s not only the traditional religionists who cling literally to the words of the sacred, rather than seeing the powerful imagery of poetry, of vision, of dreams within the words. New Age devotees also are guilty of slavishly following the words of their favorite “channel.” But just as the concepts we are imparting flow through your own consciousness and are shaped by you, so are each channel’s words shaped by their minds. Channeling comes through a channeler in unique ways just as inspiration comes through a writer or artist in unique ways.

All sacred communication is a melding of the human and the divine. Therefore to cling to words literally is not just a folly in terms of mistaking metaphoric truth for literal truth, but generally in forgetting that there is a scribe involved whose consciousness the words are filtered through, just as there is a human involved in reading or listening, and then interpreting the messages.

The infinite is really unknowable from the finite perspective, so there is a distortion in sacred messages. This does not mean that you should abandon study of the sacred texts of your tradition, or seeking guidance from us or other divine beings. But it means that your interpretation should take into account the biases of the source human, an analysis of whether there is a metaphoric interpretation of the text in question, and your own biases—for all humans have biases.

Freedom

Balloon liberation
reaching skyward toward angels
leaving cares behind

I penned this haiku (remember those Japanese 5-7-5 syllable poems in grade school?) this morning upon awakening because I remembered dreaming about a white balloon floating skyward.

I wondered if the balloon felt a sense of freedom, or a sense of wistfulness about leaving a child behind.

I asked the angels for a few words about freedom and this is what they said:

Freedom is, in your mind, a "good" thing. In your human thinking, things are bad or good. Yet from our perspective, freedom IS. It is not something that has entirely positive or negative consequences. For example, we angels cannot interfere in your life because of a principle of "free will". You are free NOT to invite us into your experience, just as you are free to do so.

There appears to be a lot of suffering in your world. You may ask about how free a child is, whom you read about in the news being beaten to death, or how free people who are "victims" or "oppressed" or whatever other words you choose, are. And we say that they have every bit as much freedom as you do.

There are many in the "New Age" who say that everyone is creating their own reality and that all of these things are the creations of the beaten child, the victims of violence, the oppressed. Let us ask you this? Have you managed to really intend something like allowing enough time to get somewhere, and run short of time anyway? Have you really intended to keep within a budget and sabotaged yourself and bought something anyway? Yes, on one level you as humans make choices. To follow divine guidance and your conscience, or not. To live a loving life, or one of violence. Yet many of your choices are really not conscious choices.

How many of your own behaviors are automatic? How many times have you tried to change a habit? So the "New Age" people you know may mean well with their simplistic formulae about creating reality, but most people do so unconsciously. How independently can a small child create a loving reality when there is rage and dysfunction filling the house? How effectively can an Iraqi choose a tranquil existence within a zone that is constantly being bombed or shelled?

We are not saying that you are not free--on the contrary, you are so free that you are free to mindlessly follow less than ideal, even destructive, paths in your life. You are free to succumb to negative subconscious programming and self-sabotage.

But this freedom does not mean that God and the angels do not care for you. It means that if and when you choose to experience something better, that we will help. It means that you can transform your life. It means that people who survive horrific experiences in youth often can use that experience to become more compassionate, loving, healing forces in the world. It means that those who don't survive horrific circumstances become examples to open others' hearts and change systems. How many people have been moved by reading the Diary of Anne Frank whose power is not merely the narrative itself, but knowing that the author was found and that she and her family were killed?

Pain and grief can be transmuted into learning and healing and growth. We tell you this so that you focus upon choosing freedoms that empower you, and that fulfill your potential as a joyful, loving being. You can choose to ask for divine assistance in letting go of negative beliefs, unconscious behaviors, habits. You can choose to look at the divinity within yourself and within others. You can choose to practice kindness. You can choose to take a deep breath and pray when faced with a difficult situation. You can make all manner of choices.

Our message's purpose is twofold. We would like you to remember that not all choices are conscious, and that it is important to help those who have defaulted unconsciously to the patterns of those around them. No child has asked to be abused or molested on a conscious level, and they should be assisted. No animal has asked to remain unneutered and then to be abandoned pregnant at an animal shelter to die. The teachings coming through various messengers about creating a better reality are designed to empower you to make your choices more consciously, not to encourage you to abandon efforts to make the world a better place for others. Secondly, we would like to encourage you to ask for divine assistance with your life. God sees you, we see you, as a divine spark of potentiality. With guidance and assistance, you can create a life as a loving, peaceful and joyous being who makes a positive difference in the lives of others.

Animal Grief Support Sites

I have the picture of one of our kittens who passed away on my screensaver, and one of my co-workers said "oh how cute!" I had to mention that she is no longer in that body physically. It's been three years, and even though I can interact with her spirit as an animal communicator, and even though it's been a while, I still fall into quiet moods sometimes about Sarabande and her brother Houdini and whether things could have been different.

So I felt guided to give a couple of links to websites that list grief support hotlines for those who are mourning the loss of their animal companions. I believe that grief counseling, or at least speaking to supportive people on a hotline, can really help.

I encourage people to allow at least a few weeks following an animal's physical transition before they contact me to schedule a communication session. Some people think it's to allow the animal to settle in. Actually, animals are pretty conscious of being spirits while they are within their bodies, as opposed to most humans who need more adjusting after they cross over. My recommendation is more about the human half of the relationship. It is helpful to be less raw in terms of grief, in order to be more present during the dialogue with one's animal.

Keeping Your Power

The angels are very empowering as well as loving. When I give an angel reading, the angels aren't fortunetellers, as though one is a victim of a future that is happening with no escape options. Instead, there is a glimpse at what is "in the works" given one's current energy and focus, and then some divine coaching about insights into the situation, and suggestions for making decisions that will move one's life in a positive direction.

What moved me to think about this topic, was listening to a famous psychic on internet radio giving mini-readings to many people. Yes, I recognize that someone might be highly accurate, but that doesn't mean that she is 100% accurate. And it's hard to tell which people she was "on" with and which she wasn't, so it seemed odd to me that people would ask about whether to stay in marriages, or what career they were "supposed" to go into, and just accept the answer. I was taken aback at how many people just wanted a quick future projection with no analysis who would make a major life change based on something someone "psychic" said in less than two minutes.

Please don't ever give away your power to anyone. Please evaluate what people say in a reading and see if it resonates with you. Does the information ring true? Does the information seem gentle, kind advice like an older sister would give you or does it sound dictatorial? You are always at choice.

Actually, one of the reasons for my blog is that I am guided to share angelic messages with anyone who has an internet connection but the other reason is related to this topic--that I can attract those clients who resonate with these messages, and people who don't find that out and can go elsewhere.

I asked the angels about this and they said:

Some people are not comfortable taking responsibility for making a major life decision. So they turn to a psychic to tell them the future. You need not worry about people pursuing careers or leaving husbands based upon a two minute psychic reading, however. People will look to the reading to help relieve them of guilt, or indecision, when the psychic tells them to do what they wanted to do deep down anyway. In the case of information that isn't what the person is willing or quite ready to do, the person is likely to go to another psychic for a second opinion.

The limiting beliefs in all of this are enormous, however. We realize that you and others who are comfortable with their intuitive gifts, have readings from others in order to make sure that your guidance is true guidance and not the wishes of your ego, as a sort of confirmation. This is not only fine, but a good thing. But those who believe that the only way they can get guidance is from outside themselves, from a "psychic", limit themselves because everyone is tapped into divine guidance to the extent that they are open to it. Those who see a psychic because they believe that there is a single future happening to them that someone else can see, limit the way in which they can choose a different experience in life.

We angels can see the larger pattern of your lives unfolding energetically. We can see if you are seeing the figurative glass half empty, or the glass half full and how that affects your experience of life. However, when we give guidance, we are not going to give a concrete event so much as read the flow of your energies, as well as your heart's true desire, and then give you guidance as to how to reroute your energies so that your true desires become more of a probability, than the remote possibility they might be at the time--or to take a probability into physical manifestation.

You are always at choice. There is a psychological phenomenon called "secondary gains". Some people gain more from illness than they want to be healed. Some people sabotage their lives in order to generate more excitement. You all know a drama queen, and to be fair, there are plenty of drama kings as well. We can point out things like this through guidance, but whether you take the guidance to heart and choose to change, is up to you.

We would like you to know that we are here for you, that you can always request divine assistance from the Creator, as well as from us and from the divine representations native to your religion and culture. We can give you the strength to make changes, not just predict or give advice. We would like you to know that you are always connected to divine guidance, even if sometimes you will want to check on your own insights through using oracles, or by having an angel reading.

You are not a victim of circumstance. You have the ability to shape your experience. Just as imagining the tartness of a lemon in your mouth can make you salivate without there being an actual lemon, by viewing situations in a more positive light you can shift your experience of life. Does this mean you will never face challenges? Not at all. But you will face life with more peace, more joy, more love--your divine birthright, when you turn within for divine guidance.

A Public Service Announcement...

Since most of my readers are animal lovers, I wanted to send this on, from a Virginia rescue group that is encountering legal problems. If the spirit moves you, please write as suggested, regardless of where you live. And I hope that all who read this will be moved to pray for this situation.

Thank you.

Forwarded email--crossposting okay

***

This is one of the most important emails I have written in 15 years of
animal rescue.

Please bear with me. This email will be a bit long. You all know
that I only use the word 'Urgent' in extreme circumstances. This is
urgent. It is crucial that you read this email carefully, understand
it fully, and respond appropriately. This issue impacts whether you
will be able to keep your rescue open.

Right now, this issue has a potential to impact ALL rescue groups and
shelters in Fairfax County and Arlington County, VA. Should we lose
the battle, it could impact not only every rescue and shelter in VA
(and possibly nationwide at some point), but it could also impact
other charitable organizations such as the Girl Scouts. It could shut
all of them down, or seriously (and negatively) impact their operations.

AFH stays current on issues that may impact our organization (and
those of our colleagues) and we want to share the following
information with you.

You are encouraged to forward it widely, including any media outlets
in your area, and you will be asked at the end of this email to
contact the appropriate authorities.

First, an introduction from Ken Cline - A Forever Home Rescue
Foundation (AFH) Board of Directors.

The zoning officials in Arlington and Fairfax Counties have cited AFH
volunteers for keeping foster dogs in their homes. The citations do
not claim that there are too many dogs, or that the volunteers don't
have a right to keep dogs - repeat - there is no violation regarding
too many dogs or a lack of care - we have NOT done anything wrong. The
claim is that, since the dogs are associated with a rescue group, they
are considered to be "for commercial purposes". Commercial uses are
prohibited in residential districts. If the dogs were not rescue dogs,
there would be no problem. This is our issue - foster homes - ours
and yours - could conceivably be shut down for good if we are
considered a 'commercial' operation.

The fallacy in this logic is that the fosters are volunteering their
homes and their time to house these dogs. There is no compensation
provided by the rescue to the foster (foster homes are NOT paid). The
fosters are performing a volunteer activity for their "own personal
use and enjoyment". If the Counties are successful in classifying
these volunteer activities as commercial in nature, then they will be
establishing a precedent that can be used against any foster provider
in the County, and potentially in the state. Since most, if not all,
rescue groups rely on foster homes to house their animals, that could
effectively put rescue in Virginia out of business.

By extension, if they are successful in classifying this type of
volunteer activity as commercial – where does the boundary lie? The
Girl Scouts rely on volunteers to staff their Girl Scout Troops and to
sell their cookies. Is that really any different? It is a volunteer
service provided to a non-profit organization – exactly what Arlington
and Fairfax are trying to classify as "commercial".

We cannot allow these citations to stand. It is imperative that we win
the appeals associated with these cases.

What you should do NOW
Please read this press release at http://www.aforeverhome.org/Forms/PressRelease-09-11-2008.pdf,
understand it, forward it to friends,
family, the media, and any other interested parties immediately, and
then contact everyone on the list below with your opinion. Post it on
your websites. Put it in your newsletters. GET THE WORD OUT. If you
don't, there is a very real possibility that rescue in Virginia will
be eliminated. I am not exaggerating this point - this is SERIOUS.
Contact everyone regardless of where you live. Remember - your county
could be next.

PLEASE - be polite and professional but FIRM.

I will copy all of the email addresses to the bottom of this email so
you can cut and paste it into your email and send one email to
everyone on the list.

Some points to include in your email:
1. You support rescue - tell them why
2. Foster homes are NOT commercial. Neither the foster nor the
rescue profits.
3. If rescue is stopped, tens of thousands more animals will die
every year.
4. If rescue is stopped, it will cost the County/State thousands and
thousands of dollars (because rescue saves them money by taking
animals they would otherwise kill - which costs taxpayers $$)
5. If the people you are contacting are elected officials - you will
not vote for them again.
6. If rescue is stopped, you will limit your spending in those
counties as much as possible.
7. The rural shelters that we help will suffer even more since they
have so much less than we do now. If we couldn't help them, a 100%
kill rate in their shelters is possible.
8. If you are not a rescuer (just an animal lover), this impacts you
too - write to these people about how you would feel about rescue
going away and tens of thousands of additional animals dying every year.

You guys are all good at this - you have the facts. Use your heart to
write the rest.

Blah, Blah, Blah….

Have you ever been caught in conversation with someone who opened her—or his—mouth before thinking things out and managed to spend a long time verbally thinking out loud? I must confess to thinking less than nice thoughts when that happens, and trying to find an opportunity to escape, while thinking ‘WHAT IS YOUR POINT OR DO YOU EVEN KNOW????!!!!’ at a minimum… Grrr… So I was thinking about my irritation at those who waste my time, when they could be talking to a fence post to formulate their ideas, as opposed to seeking my opinion on thought-out ideas, and I started to wonder if God and the angels ever get impatient with our waffling about what we want, or our equivocating, or asking the same questions over and over seeking guidance because our egos want a different answer.

Well, I am very glad to report that God and the angels are a lot less judgmental and a lot more patient than traditional religionists would have us believe—they don’t judge. That doesn’t mean there aren’t wiser or better behaviors or attitudes we could choose, or that there aren’t things that can be healed in each of us. But we are not condemned for where we are. Thank God!

I asked the angels about this and they said:

Yes, you can get pretty impatient and seething mad. This is because you expect people to all be the same, on a subconscious level, and they should all have standard x for behavior, or for manners, or for intelligence, etc. Well, people are human. You’re low on the patience scale and quick to anger. Some people are more cheerful, others are more grumpy. Some people are logical and left-brain oriented, and others are less analytical.

This upsets you as a human, because you think things should be the way you believe they should. This includes your expectations of yourself and your expectations of others, and this is pretty frustrating. You see, from a divine perspective, all is as it is and we accept that. This doesn’t mean there isn’t room for development or improvement or healing. There always is an upward spiral of growth that can be taken. But we don’t have your frustration of expecting what is not.

You don’t expect a newborn baby to run a marathon or do calculus. There are stages of development that you can see in the physical maturation of a baby to child to adult. Yet from our perspective, we see a larger picture of maturation of souls over time, and we see that people are where they are, and that where they were is where they were—and we don’t lose patience with where people are.

So leave your disappointment in others, and your disappointment in yourself, behind. Accept what is. This doesn’t mean that you need to subject yourself to people, behaviors and experiences you deem unpleasant. It means that you can choose who you interact with and choose what you like, without condemning what you don’t want. You like sushi and know other people who don’t. You can encourage people who like to process by talking, to talk to other people who process thought in the same way. You can find like minded people to interact with. The world is as it is and it is more fruitful to seek out what you like than it is to condemn what you don’t like and continue to accept it in your experience.

International Angel Day

Wishing everyone a very happy 3rd annual International Angel Day, honoring our connection with the angels, and praying for our world and all within it. This year, Doreen didn’t publish a specific prayer for everyone to use in advance, so I leave you all with this prayer:

Beloved Creator, ascended masters, and angels,

We ask that today, and every day, be one of sacredness, consecrated to love, peace and joy. We ask that you help open our hearts to divine guidance. We ask to be instruments of God on earth and to help others. We ask to be instruments of God on earth and to recognize and honor the divine within ourselves and one another.

We ask that the angels lift all that is heavy from our hearts. Please cleanse us of fear, sadness, anger, and unforgiveness. Please help us lift our hearts and minds in positive, creative and loving ways. Please help us find peace within, and help to make the world a more peaceful place, one person at a time.

We give thanks that this is so. Amen.
