Love Is Eternal

You have to trust that every true friendship has no end, that a communion of saints exists among all those, living and dead, who have truly loved God and one another. You know from experience how real that is. Those you have loved deeply and who have died live on in you, not just as memories but as real presences.

Henri Nouwen
The Inner Voice of Love: A Journey Through Anguish to Freedom

If you've ever recited the Apostle's Creed in church and professed belief in the communion of saints but not known what that meant, the communion of saints means that there is a continued and continuing relationship amongst all those "saints" living and deceased.... I like how Henri Nouwen inclusively refers to all those who have truly loved God and one another, not limiting this to a particular creed or theology.

This continued relationship is the reason that people ask the saints to pray for them, just as one would ask someone from their church to pray for them. The communion of saints includes those living and dead. For example, in the Catholic rosary, the Hail Mary asks Mother Mary to "pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death." People ask the saints for assistance because sometimes we don't exactly have a lot of faith, we are discouraged or fearful or angry, and we would prefer that other people who have lots of faith pray for us.... Likewise, we can call upon the angels to pray for us as well--or a community of friends.

The communion of saints also includes our loved ones who have preceded us in death to the spiritual plane. Not that all of our relations are necessarily "saintly" on earth, or necessarily miraculously become wise once they cross over, but we still have bonds of love with them--and whatever their beliefs on earth, I find that they acknowledge and understand the existence of God once they are "dead."

This communion of saints enables mediumship. It also enables us to feel the energy of our loved ones comforting us at their funerals, when we think of them, for them to visit us in dreams.... I include animals in the communion of saints, whatever the official church position might be. As far as I'm concerned, most animals are purer hearted than most people--and I know that my animals in spirit can hear me, feel my love--and that I occasionally see our kitten in spirit Houdini dashing through our garage.

I have asked the angels for a message:

Love is forever and love never dies. The love you feel for your friends and relatives, the love you feel for cats and dogs and all of creation, is a microcosm of the love your Creator feels for you. In this web of love, your connections are never broken. Often you will find a dream or message of significance from a loved one on an anniversary or other significant date, or find an energetic sign from them through a flickering light, or a butterfly's unusual appearance. If you feel your beloved's energy, trust that you ARE still connected and being reminded that you are thought of from Heaven as often as you think of them.

Trust that eternity is not in duration. Eternity is in timelessness, not a long time but moments outside of time. Therefore it's possible to smell your father's aftershave 20 years after his body's "death" or to hear someone's words in your head--or for important documents to appear (at least appear in your awareness) when you're asking about them. Eternality means that all moments are accessible all at once, and that the sequencing of time is really an illusion for the benefit of your human organization of experience.
