I can show you the world
Shining, shimmering, splendid
Tell me, princess, now when did
You last let your heart decide?
I can open your eyes
Take you wonder by wonder
Over, sideways and under
On a magic carpet ride
A whole new world
A new fantastic point of view
No one to tell us no
Or where to go
Or say we're only dreaming
A whole new world
A dazzling place I never knew
But when I'm way up here
It's crystal clear
That now I'm in a whole new world with you
Now I'm in a whole new world with you
Unbelievable sights
Indescribable feeling
Soaring, tumbling, freewheeling
Through an endless diamond sky
A whole new world
Don't you dare close your eyes
A hundred thousand things to see
Hold your breath - it gets better
I'm like a shooting star
I've come so far
I can't go back to where I used to be
A whole new world
Every turn a surprise
With new horizons to pursue
Every moment red-letter
I'll chase them anywhere
There's time to spare
Let me share this whole new world with you
A whole new world
That's where we'll be
A thrilling chase
A wondrous place
For you and me
Lyrics by Tim Rice, "A Whole New World" theme from Disney movie ALADDIN
On Sunday, we went with friends to Disneyland and Disney's California Adventure. At the California Adventure theme park, there is a wonderful staged production of Aladdin. I recommend it to people with children--including inner children....
I was contemplating this song, and thought of the New Age movement and something that bothers me about "New Agers." They seem to believe in some magical "ascension", some wonderful transformation of the world that's happening to take us into some new dimension. I don't necessarily think that the transformations they envision are that wonderful.
e.g.,
"As we begin to vibrate higher and higher we become less and
less of a match to what has been created so far on this planet
and also to any lower vibrating aspects of other human
behaviors and realities. One might think that as we become
more spiritual we embody a great compassion, understanding,
and tolerance at higher levels than we ever have before. But
this is not the case. As we progress through ascension and
begin to vibrate higher and higher, we find ourselves becoming
highly intolerant of any lower vibrating energies."
--Karen Bishop (of www.emergingearthangels.com) I'm not sure that getting less tolerant and less compassionate is a good thing....
There have been radical changes in the past century, from electricity to space programs, to airplanes and mobile phones and the internet, which we can take advantage of. Information can spread instantly electronically. On the other hand, there are still situations of great suffering like in Darfur. There are children dying of malaria for lack of mosquito nets, children orphaned in Africa from AIDS, and animals dying in shelters across America. We have environmental issues such as global warming, animals who are endangered, and pollution.
It's one thing to jet off to see a guru and talk blissfully about your consciousness "ascending" and another thing to look upon the situations on earth and about how we can make a difference in the world we have. So I decided to ask the angels about this "new world" or "new age" and what they have to say:
There is perpetually a new world created, there is perpetually an evolution of consciousness, there is perpetually an expansion and complexity as things evolve. Yet these things did not begin with the modern era, and these things will not be ended thousands of years from now. There is a continued unfolding of creation. It is natural that the Creator did not create a static creation, but one that lives and breathes and has its own life.
The earth is alive. She is called Mother Earth by some, Gaia by others. The stars and planets and galaxies, the dirt and bugs and bacteria, YOU--and everything in between--are alive. You are living within the infinite Life that is God.
There was great wisdom in ancient times. Because of the lack of writing, the wisdom has not been recorded in ink or in megabytes, but it is engraved in the minds and hearts of all who think today. Thought is alive and thought moves forward, just as people and plants and animals.
Yes, there are people who think some of the less evolved thoughts such as of envy, of war, of hatred.... Yet there are others that tap into ancient wisdom, into thoughts of gratitude and prayer and joy. Most people tap into both beautiful and less than beautiful thoughts. Yet thought continues to move forward, as an overall trend.
Is there a new age? New compared to what? Many ideas of the so-called New Age are very ancient. Many ideas of the New Age are distortions and oversimplifications of ancient wisdom. The culture of instant gratification in which you live has produced some Cliff's Notes versions of spirituality, stripped of context and deeper meanings. On the other hand, there are many beautiful things that have been reawakened by the New Age movement, things that people who don't think of themselves as New Age engage in with value. Oprah has popularized the practice of journaling things one is grateful for, by way of example. This transcends belief systems.
Your world continues to change at a rapid pace, including thoughts and ideas. Yet for those who look to the New Age for an "ascension" that is salvation from this world, there is nothing to be saved from. The true "ascension" is a continued evolution of thoughts, concepts and ideas, and bringing them into fruition in this world to create more sustainable energy sources, ways to cleanse pollutants, ways to live in peace, ways to bring healing to those with disease.... This isn't about escaping into another "reality." Jesus said the kingdom of God is within. The kingdom of God is right here, within your mind and heart as you seek ways to help and heal the planet, yourselves, and others.
